Department
of Telecommunications (DoT) -
1. DoT
used to provide basic telecommunication services in India. This function was
shifted to BSNL after its formation in October, 2000.
2. Presently,
the main powers and responsibilities of the DoT Rules, 1961 are:
3. Formulation
of policy, allocation of license and co-ordination with matters
relating to telegraphs, telephones, wireless, data, facsimile and telematic
services and other like forms of communications.
4. Co-operation
with international bodies on matters related to telecommunication
5. Promotion
of standardization and research and development in the telecom sector.
6. Promotion
of private investment in telecommunication industry
7. Allocation
of spectrum mobile and radio communications.
8. Supervision over the functioning of the following organizations: Telecom Commission, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal, Centre for Development of Telematics, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, ITI Limited, Telecommunication Consultants (India) Limited and Administrative office of the Universal Service Obligation Fund.
9. Essar
became the first company to start GSM operations in Delhi under the
brand name, Essar Cellphones.
